Ushu and Mahodand
A bridge crosses to the east bank of the Swat River at the north end of the town. Shortly afterwards the road forks; left to Utror and Gabrail; right to the Ushu and Mahudand valley. Following the right fork, the road goes through the thick pine forest and climbs up the Ushu Valley to Ushu Village. Beyond the village a Jeep road (4×4 drive), after 35 kms drive take you to Mahudand Lake (Lake of fishes).
Utror and Gabrail
After crossing the river to the north of Kalam, the road follows the Utror river for 16 kms to Utror village. The road is metalled for first nine kilometers and then it becomes a rough road. There are numerous picnic resorts but there is no such facility for lodging and boarding except a Govt Forest rest house (for residence permit is required from the forest department).
Desan Valley
The valley which climbs up from behind the Walnut Heights Hotel above Kalam, through meadows, pine forests is also very beautiful. There is no Jeep track here but one can explore the valley by hiking. Kalam travel guide recommends the following tours:
